Before 1803, it was part of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster (hence the name ''Münsterland''). It comprises the modern day counties of Cloppenburg and Vechta, an area with over 600 years of shared history and tradition. Still primarily defined by its agriculture, the area claims the highest density of poultry, pork and beef farming within Germany.
